Integration of GIS and topology data for Severočeské doly

Severočeské doly a.s. implemented an extensive project dealing with the unification of diverse GIS systems into one unified platform presented by ESRI technology. Simultaneously, a complex data storage system was created. A DULMAP system for digital quarry modeling was used, offering the ability to create mine maps according to the relevant technical legislation.​

Customer profile

Severočeské doly is the largest company extracting brown coal and accompanying raw materials in the Czech Republic. Mining activities take place in the North Bohemia lignite area, and in Tušimice and Bílina mines.

Starting point

As with any other surface mine, the area is undergoing intensive and irreversible changes that require exact planning and documentation. The task was to create a new system, not to replace the specialized systems currently in use, but to allow the easiest possible use of their outputs and to provide data for their operation. Also identified was the need to ensure archiving of the mining area database status for a given date.

Project outcome

An integration platform for the utilization and presentation of the mine spatial data was created. The data comes from several data sources and applications operated within the company. Diverse GIS systems were unified into one ESRI technology platform (ArcGIS system), including unification of map mining documentation on this platform, and unified data storage for spatial data was created. Functional and swift display of data is ensured by a web interface.

The project scope included design and implementation of a central database and validation of all data processing processes within the company, as well as validation of data from external sources, such as the Cadastre of Real Estate, or from the suppliers of reclamation plans. Imports and exports of data in diverse formats were completed according to the prepared specifications and the data can be shared using web services. Also, an environment supporting property management including a link to economic data in SAP was created. Functionalities supporting data imports from different systems used in both company mines were further developed.

Tasks were implemented according to the needs of individual departments. These cover the key company processes such as administration of land and reclamations, tasks for strategic mine planning to present data from planning documentation, comparison of data from different time periods, and presentation of geological sections including the ability to provide the data to the user in a PDF or DXF format. Another function that was implemented was an on-line display of excavators using GPS navigation. A separate device was provided in order to administer archived sites.

A DULMAP system for the creation and maintenance of spatial data of the surface mine areas in order to ensure map mining according to the relevant technical legislation was integrated into the ArcMap environment. The new DULMAP provides support for data update in GIS, unified data storage of topology data, as well as support for specific mine mapping symbology.

Simple modification using templates and configuration is available due to the modularity of the application, which allows follow-up development according to the gradually increasing number of requirements.
